Commercial theaters are painted dark colors for good reason because you want to focus on the screen and not the walls. When it comes to the walls and ceiling the goal is to not use anything that would distract from the room s focal point the screen. My room is a mostly dedicated theater room but it also serves as a sometimes guest bedroom. White is usually the color recommended for ceilings because it reflects maximum light.

But in home theaters light reflection is not desirable. Use a flat no glare paint. But no matter how dedicated a movie viewer you are you probably don t want. Colors such as grey dark brown burgundy or black are good choices.

I recently upgraded the video aspects of my home theater to include a 100 screen and projector and in a word its awesome. Home theaters even benefit from darker ceilings near the screen.
